Post 16 SEND Student Transport Policy

Minutes:

2        POST 16 SEND STUDENT TRANSPORT POLICY – The Director: Children and Families submitted a report seeking approval of the council’s Post 16 Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Student Transport Policy.

The council had a statutory duty to facilitate the attendance of people of Sixth Form age to education or training, but students could be expected to pay all or part of the cost of transport.

If a young person had an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), learning difficulties or disabilities, or medical needs, and was aged between 16 and 25 on 31 August 2022, they may have been eligible for assistance with transport if they were unable to travel independently either by public transport or on foot to their post-16 education provision.

A contribution of £30 per term would be required towards the cost of the transport provided.

Young people with an EHCP would have the right to request a personal budget for some or all of the provision. Transport costs could be considered as part of a personal budget if a young person was entitled to Post 16 travel assistance.

Resolved – That the Post 16 SEND Student Transport Policy shown at appendix 1 of the report be approved.
