Not In Our Community - Presentation and discussion with the Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside

Minutes:

The Chairman welcomed Cllr Jonathan Evison, Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner, and Laura Hodgson, Projects Officer, to the meeting.  The Chairman explained that the Commissioner had been invited to provide an update and overview of the ongoing ‘Not In Our Community’ project, which aimed to protect young people from exploitation and grooming.

The Commissioner gave a detailed presentation on the project, including a number of case study video clips.  The presentation covered the available resources, the reach into young people’s communities, funding, accessibility, and links into education.  It was explained that a new Education Partnership had been established to improve crime education for young people, reduce risk, and prevent them being impacted by criminality, grooming or exploitation.

The Panel welcomed the innovative approach, with the Chairman leading a discussion on issues such as the effectiveness of the wider criminal justice system, the involvement of parents and guardians, the size and demographic make-up of the locally engaged cohort, and options for redirecting young people into productive activities.  The Commissioner responded fully to these queries, highlighting that he wished to roll out the project further, including engaging with local military veterans.

Resolved – (a) That the Police and Crime Commissioner and Laura Hodgson be thanked for their attendance and informative presentation; and (b) that the Not In Our Community project be welcomed and supported.
